Scotland Yard Gospel Choir, Girls Rock!, and Matt Ulery’s Loom play July 23!
WHO IS SYGC? We are a chambery folky punky band based in Chicago. We’ve played with The Violent Femmes and The Arcade Fire. We’ve been glowingly praised in Billboard and Time Out NY. Elia’s songs from our first album have been featured on The OC, in a Michael Rappaport film, and in a play at Second City. Press for our current record: “A hug for the downtrodden.” -Spin.com; “Einhorn’s lyrics, his deft collisions of the dark and the upbeat, recall Morrissey at his sharpest.” -Time Out Chicago; “Brilliant” -Newcity; “4/5 stars — Beautiful” -Allmusic.com; “Street corner stories… dolled up style and wise-guy sensibility… [Elia is] a taleteller in the David Johansen mode.” -Paste Magazine
Girls Rock! Chicago is a 501(c)(3) non-for profit organization dedicated to fostering girls’ creative expression, positive self-esteem and community awareness through rock music. Through our music education programs for girls ages 8-16, we are committed to educating girls about the musical, technical, and creative aspects involved in musicianship, because we believe that young girls are rarely encouraged to explore self-expressive creative outlets and are less likely to be given access to musical and technical instruction or equipment. We believe that rock music can be a crucial tool in allowing young women to respond to preconceived notions of what they can do and what they can become. 12 year old veteran of the Girls Rock! Camp,Alex Lund, will be delighting the Summer Sessions crowd with Beyoncé covers and top 10 hits.
Matt Ulery’s ‘Loom’ has been captivating audiences since 2005. Quickly following their first release, Music Box Ballerina (2008) and Ulery’s solo effort, Themes and Scenes (2009), Loom released a game-changing single, “The Queen”, in anticipation of their second full length album,Flora.Fauna.Fervor (2011). The music, while coming from the American and European jazz tradition, including highly syncopated rhythms, modern jazz harmony, and improvisation, is also influenced by folk music from the Americas and Eastern Europe, as well as modern alternative and indie rock bands from all over the world. Ulery’s music has been described as “cinematic and fanciful”, and “…like a seedling unfurling from the soil. …each player—and each style and tradition the band draws on—is like a thread in a sumptuous fabric.” —Peter Margasak, Chicago Reader
